Eunoia

Another beautiful Greek word I want to share!

Eunoia: (n) a pure and well-balanced mind, a good spirit, “Beautiful Thinking”

Beautiful thinking…. Just the idea of that action makes me smile. Thinking of the positives in every situation. Finding the beauty in everything! Waking up each day with a purpose to highlight the beautiful moments and let those moments guide your journey. We get to decide each morning! Sure there will be bumps in the road or our day that affect our mood, but will we just let them affect the moment or the rest of our day? We get to decide!

A pure and well-balanced mind…. A mind that is always seeking truth, goodness, harmony. Constantly on a journey of growth. We can always learn something I believe. Mistakes or failures are just learning experiences for us. Every day we end a different person from the experiences we went through during that day. Each morning we wake up refreshed to learn, and experience more. Being pure of mind could seem to some a daunting task… being perfect and not full of guilt or other bad things. Being humans we always have slip-ups here and there, but if we are constantly striving for purity, for that goodness and fine quality, that is equally as important. A pure mind doesn’t think evil things or go out of it’s way to do or say things to harm others. That is the simple explanation of a pure mind.

When you think of a fine metal that is pure, there is nothing else, but that metal. Pure gold is beautiful, rich, and glowing, nothing marring the value and grade. A pure mind can be the same. Always focusing on the good things in life. Looking to bring out the good qualities and interactions in others. Making those around you feel special and loved. Giving everyone a safe space to be themselves knowing they will never be judged when around you. Giving people the benefit of the doubt, and not being quick to point fingers. Just living our life to the fullest and loving all those who cross our path.

When I hear or think of the word eunoia one of the thoughts that crosses my mind is your core. The very center of you, your aura or soul. Your core fundamentals and values. If someone were able to look into your very core, what would they see? What would you want them to see? What are the traits you hold so close to yourself and also want to be remembered by? Your honor, courage, love, drive, kindness…. All of these are strong positive traits that create your eunoia. You need all these good traits to have that balanced pure mind. To be able to be a beautiful thinker not jaded by the world around you. We must be watchful and alert, but at the same time never let our experiences make us bitter and quick to judge or shut down when life throws curves our way. We need to be resilient! This can be very hard to do especially if we are hurting deeply. Time will heal though…. It is a constant journey and struggle, but always get back up. Always try again. Be watchful and aware, but also be kind. Give of that vibe of kindness. A good spirit in my opinion is resilient as well. A good spirit is full of light and gets right back up if knocked down. Sometimes your spirit can be dampened, but a good spirit fights back and shines through.

Find the like-minded people around you that bring out all these qualities in you. The people who think the same way and agree with your beautiful beliefs. They push you to grow, and to always look outside of the box. Don’t make up your mind instantly, take the time to look at the WHOLE picture with no bias. Surround yourself with people who are the same way and support each other, and push each other to always have that open mind. When we start judging others around us everything just goes down hill from there in my opinion. We really have no right to judge others either due to the fact we are far from perfect ourselves. We are so grateful to those around us who accept and embrace us flaws and all, so why should we act any different to those around us? There is that one bible story where Jesus said “he who is sinless throw the first stone…” All of us have faults so learning to remember that everyone is only human and we all stumble will be so freeing in the long run for us, and those around us. The people around us suddenly feel comfortable to be themselves and feel free to open up and speak their minds since you will listen and not make them feel stupid for opening up.

Being a beautiful thinker is exactly like being the bee (Blog Link). You search out the goodness and beauty in everything. You most often enough have a vivid imagination that blossoms and paints scenarios full of love, life and color. In a world that is pretty grey and struggling a lot of the time, color is so beautiful and freeing. Just picture the positivity flowing from your love painting all the greyness around you bright colors full of life. We have to consciously make the decision to search out that beauty sometimes, but if we make those decisions continuously they will become second nature to us, and become part of our spirit. Become part of our good spirit, our core, and soul. We must lead by example as well. Don’t be afraid if you seem different from all those around you. Everyone has good in them, but sometimes it’s buried a bit deeper. Sometimes people need to be woken up and have their eyes opened. Never judge or think differently of those around you even if they do those exact things to you. We just have to be open, kind, unbiased and ready with a helping and loving hand. Those things will touch those around us and hopefully then the wave affect will happen. Give love, watch it blossom, and go out into the world. You never know what might come back your way, but always be that beautiful thinker. Living with a well-balanced mind that finds the harmony and beauty in life. Purity is a virtue, aspire for those finer pure moments in life and your spirit will blossom and thrive.

Talk about deep, but very meaningful. We do have the ability to decide how our day is going to go. Wake up wanting to experience the beauty of the world, and in that mindset, and you’ll have an amazing day. Wake up in a bad mood, and your day will reflect that. Positive vibes are the key, finding people who exude those vibes and push you to be better will have a positive impact on your life in ways you can’t imagine.

    Very well written post!

So many wonderful points in here, Mikaela! I love the concept of “beautiful thinking” – our thoughts set the tone for how we interpret things, interact with others, and make decisions, I believe. If we can train our minds to be better at beautiful thinking – to focus on the positive, to seek out the beauty in others or a situation – then we give ourselves a better chance to not be dragged down by things which we would otherwise have reacted negatively to.

And if we can change our behavior to be more positive, then our impact on all those around us will be more positive, directly or indirectly. This is, I believe, a very worthy goal. It’s definitely one I strive toward and struggle with. I’ve got many years of being judgmental and critical that I have to retrain. That isn’t an excuse for my behavior, but rather a reminder to myself to not be discouraged when I fall back to old ways.

I like the imagery of eunoia being at our core, it’s the foundation of who we are. The things which make up our foundation are what will be shown to others through our words and our actions. If we don’t know what those core values are or don’t work towards incorporating them more strongly in ourselves, then people will have to look harder and deeper to see them, the example we will set will be more muddled.

If a person is a Christian (as I am), I see eunoia as a recognition that we are flawed sinners whose foundation is in God. The more we work on centering ourselves on God, the more those Christ-like attributes will shine forth. As you say, it’s also an acceptance that we are flawed, that we are sinners; in God’s eyes, we are all equally sinful (I believe) regardless of our beliefs.

Very good words, Mikaela, this is another wonderful post. Well done!
