I Like Me

So often enough we get swamped with every day life. With emotions, stressors, curveballs…. Lots of things. Run down and not taking enough time to recoup and recharge we start picking at ourselves. We tear apart every little detail we don’t really like about ourselves until it becomes a bigger problem. The image that comes to mind for me is that small pimple on your face. It’s pretty tiny and actually not too bad, you can slap some cream on it and let it rest, or some cover up and it’ll heal up pretty fast. Instead we usually pick at it and then it becomes red and bigger and worse, it usually scabs over and then takes longer to heal. I am so bad at this…. I often fall prey to this and then deal with the self-consciousness of the worse spot on my face than before. This is exactly what it’s like with little things about ourselves that might bother us. They actually aren’t huge problems, they’re usually just ways we are different from others and the ways we sometimes stand out instead of meld into the crowd. We could embrace these parts of us and know they make us wholly who we are, but often enough we pick at ourselves and tear these little differences apart. Then they become bigger insecurities and wreck our self-confidence and security in ourselves. NOT COOL! This is instead where we need to combat those habits with things we like about ourselves, and no that is not conceited, no that is instead just reminders of all the cool things we are. Sometimes we need that reminder, that little check in on ourselves by ourselves. Often enough I find when I really think about the things I like about myself I feel a lot more secure and invincible in my person. These are my characters; these are what make me Mikaela.

So I wanted to do a little exercise with this post. I’m going to share several things in here that I really like about myself. Things about myself that keep me going when the times get rough. Parts of myself that I am proud of and work hard to keep strong and a part of me. Then in the comment section below after this post I would love it if all of you commented several things you loved about yourself too. It could range from big to little. Anything you really love about yourself no matter the size. And then after writing that in the comment section write it down somewhere in a journal or something that you can keep close and turn back to when you are having a bumpy day to remind yourself of how great you actually are when the doubt starts creeping in.

  1. I love my discipline… There have been quite a few times along the way when my motivation has just not been there, but I have pushed through. If we learn to be disciplined and have a strong drive when the going gets rough we will always move forward. The going might be slower, but we will still be going… Like the movie “What about Bob!” BABY STEPS! Just keep going and know that motivation will return. It could feel different than before, but it will return.
  2. Caring…. I care a lot. Sometimes that can hurt me for caring so much, but I am so thankful for my intuition to care first. I really try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt and share as much love as I possibly can. There are quite a few times I am blindsided, which saddens me, but I just get up and still care. It is really important to love as much as we can. I always try to remember if I want to see change out there I need to be the change. If we want to see more love out in the world that has to start with us.
  3. My laugh… now I know that might seem like a trivial item to some, but I usually am a very happy person. I really like to laugh and be happy about the things around me. AND when I find something I really find funny I snort laugh, and then I laugh because I snorted and then I snort again… and the cycle just continues. Haha. That is something I really like about myself, just the ability to laugh and have fun in life and smile. That’s super special.
  4. My curiosity and sense of adventure. I LOVE the side of me that always wants to know more. Especially about different cultures, and history, and food. I made a pact with myself a long time ago that I would try any food put in front of me, at LEAST try it and that has led to some fun food adventures. I am always down to explore something new, and experience and broaden my scopes. It broadens your mind and reminds you that your little daily bubble you live in isn’t the only thing out there. There is a whole huge world and universe around us full of so many beautiful and incredible things to learn about.

This is just a start of things that are really awesome about me, and no I don’t get proud or vain afterwards in a negative way. No I actually feel even more secure in my person. The doubts diminish and I can remind myself that yeah there will be bumpy days or times for us all when we question our worth, but we do have tools to fight back. This list is one of those tools…. When those questioning doubts and thoughts creep into our head about our worth and if we are like-able at all we can answer back with our lists. We can answer back strongly and firmly knowing that we all are incredible in our own unique ways.

So I would so love it if you shared a few things about yourself in the comments below that you really love, and then journal them too. The list can be a work in progress never fully completed as well as a reminder to you what you hold dear about yourself and what you can keep cultivating.

I hope you all are having a wonderful and blessed week.

    This is so fun!

I really like my smile, and I love to smile, and it seems to create other people’s smile in return.

I really like my ability to communicate with just about anyone and find a commonality with them, which in turns gets them to open up and I get to learn so much about them.

My positivity and energy. The nicest thing my ex ever said about me, was that I have enough energy to power a third world country.

I think what I like most about myself, is my ability to accept people for who they are, I don’t judge, I just want people to be who they are, in return guess what, they smile. 🙂

  4. What a brilliant reminder to love ourselves. Like you, I am very caring and thoughtful, sometimes to my detriment, but that’s just the way the cookie crumbles. I love the quote you shared about needing to be the change that we want to see. So true!

While I was reading this post, a thought came to my mind. How can two people so far away, who have never known each other be so alike? I wrote a very similar post on my blog a few months back titled 10 Things I Love About Me. I have really suffered from insecurities and as you said, drawing out the good parts of me really helped.
I love how creative and emphatic I am. I also love how weird I can be sometimes.

Mikaela: So glad I finally found this article. I really enjoyed reading about the things you love about yourself! I just laughed out loud when I read about your “snort laugh”. Awwww, so cute and totally hilarious! I’ll have to save a good Canadian joke for that special time when I’m able to meet you in person! It would be one of the highlights of my life!

Ok, on to your assignment! What I love about myself:

    1. Caring. I care deeply about people. I love to compliment all of the wonderful things I see in people.

    2. Empathy. Yes, perhaps this is a part of caring deeply & loving people. Sometimes, peoples stories really hurt inside, I feel them. And sometimes, I feel great joy! I’ll always continue to listen and love people in this way.

    3. Animals. I really love pets; especially cats and dogs. Like people they are all so different. Cats pretty much exist to please themselves. Probably closer to “wild” than dogs? Dogs on the other hand exist to please their pack leader. Their whole life revolves around us. The sad part about some cats and dogs is the fact that many are still abused and they need someone to speak on their behalf. I do what I can which honestly never seems to be enough.
I was also a fish biologist and fish hatchery manager. This was my life. I think I knew I wanted to work with fish since I was about four years old; and I did it! Loved the work, love fish, and was lucky enough to work at a University helping students to learn about fish.

    4. Patience. I have a lot. Have always been patient with people and animals. Animals seem to sense this; and kids will sometimes take advantage of this. In the long run, I believe this is what made me a good teacher.

    5. Love. I believe I have a big heart. Always have! I need to learn about the different types of love that Mikaela mentions in her blogs. I’m looking forward to that and I’ll be a better person for it.

    6. Teaching. Apparently, I’m a natural! I mentioned some University experiences earlier. Patience helps a lot here. And my favourite form of teaching is coaching young people’s sports.

    7. Listening. I used to tell students that I learned more from them than they did from me! Anyone who takes the time to listen to others will be rewarded in so many different ways.

    8. Smiling & Laughing. Well, I don’t have a “snort laugh” like Mikaela (reading Mikaela’s description brought tears of laughter to my eyes!), but I love to laugh. Perhaps one day I’ll be fortunate enough to personally see Mikaela in action!

    9. Warrior. This was in me, but I just always called it “stubborn”. I like Mikaela’s label of “warrior” better, and day by day in the gym and in my life I’m learning to put this to good use.

I hope we aren’t limited on word count; I’m past my quota. Honestly, I didn’t think I’d find three things. I suppose reading Mikaela’s blogs is teaching me to find the good things in my life; and others.

Thanks Mikaela! This was an interesting assignment. You’d make a wonderful teacher!
